Year 10 Builds Confidence Through Progressive Hiking Program

Over two terms, Year 10 students completed a progressive hiking program designed to grow confidence, practical outdoor skills, leadership and independence.

The journeys themselves were only one part of the learning. In the classroom, students prepared for each trip by developing trip and food plans, considering safety and risk management, learning basic first aid and exploring the teamwork needed for successful expeditions.

Their first overnight hike at Boudi National Park introduced the foundations: carrying and managing equipment, navigating tracks and working as a team. A five-day journey through Barrington Tops extended the challenge, with students carrying their own gear, adapting to changing conditions and developing greater self-reliance. A smaller group then chose the final extension hike in Goulburn River National Park, travelling largely off-track and applying advanced navigation, route-finding and decision-making skills in a rugged landscape.

By gradually increasing the challenge, students could build on each experience through preparation, practice and reflection. We are proud of the perseverance, teamwork and growth shown throughout the program. Read more about the learning experiences available in High School.
