As the weather cooled, Muloobinba Waldorf Minamba, Newcastle Waldorf School gathered for our Takarir Winter Festival, sharing warmth, light and connection in the heart of winter.
This year’s festival was inspired by Awabakal seasonal indicators. A giant model of Berabakaan, the whale, was crafted from water-vine harvested from our Indigenous Resources garden. The story followed the whale’s winter migration, which begins when the gymea lily, Minmaii, starts to bloom.
Together, our community acted out the colours and beings of Country as the journey unfolded. Wilai, the possum, and Kantalong, the spotted gum, joined Watalong, the wattle, and Waakan, the crow. Lanterns followed the whale, voices gathered around the fire and the Winter spiral offered a quiet inner journey. Year 6 students walked the geometrical form of our Muloobinba Waldorf Minamba Kinship map with firesticks, with Birabaan holding the form.
